1978 – Harvard Law School: J.D. – Cum Laude. While at Harvard, Sussman worked as a legal researcher for Professors Tribe, Bell and Associate Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer and served as an attorney for prison inmates at state prisons.
1975 – Amherst College: B.A. Economics, Slavic Studies and Philosophy – Magna Cum Laude
1971-72 – University of Chicago: Majored in Economics and Slavic Studies.
1986-present: Sussman & Associatess, was known as Sussman & Watkins, and previously, the Law Offices of Michael H. Sussman & Sussman. The firm has specialized in civil rights and constitutional law. During this period, I have argued about 300 cases in the federal Circuit Courts, the vast majority in the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and served as lead counsel in more than 1000 civil rights and complex criminal cases.
1981-1986: Assistant General Counsel, NAACP National Office. Sussman litigated a full docket of civil rights cases across the United States on behalf of the National office of the NAACP. Beginning in May 1981, Sussman served as lead counsel for the Yonkers Branch, NAACP and a class of approximately 40,000 individuals in a successful school and housing segregation suit against the City of Yonkers, Yonkers Board of Education, State of New York and HUD.
1978-1981: Trial Attorney, Civil Rights Division [CRD], United States Department of Justice, Washington, D.C. Sussman litigated school segregation and housing discrimination cases for the CRD, including school desegregation cases in Charleston (SC), Chicago, Cleveland and Indianapolis and housing discrimination cases in Mobile, Alabama, Boston, Detroit and St. Louis. He received awards from the Attorney General in 1980 and 1981 for "Outstanding Service to the Department of Justice."

Sussman has published law review articles and given numerous speeches and presentations about civil rights and constitutional law. Sussman has also presented Continuing Legal Education classes in the areas of special education and civil rights litigation, both through Lorman Educational Services and the Finkelstein Law Firm CLE program in Orange County, New York.
